Kelly McElroy Thesis Statement

I have become particularly interested in displaying dark/adult concepts in a bright, childlike style after seeing a documentary on yami kawaii harajuku fashion. This “children’s” book contains teddy bears playing out the entirety of Shakespeare’s most violent play, Titus Andronicus. It is a fun and interesting combination that can either downplay the brutality or make the violence so much more haunting by adding childish innocence to the situation.

This collaboration began with David selecting text and scenes from Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus that he believed were important to the story, some of the text are quotes and some he rewrote in a way that allows children to understand the text better. He then sent me the text, with some context, and it was my job to illustrate the scenes based off of the text he gave me. The original draft was presented at a writer’s conference and then completely redrawn and redesigned afterwards.
