Bob Mould at the Pritzker Pavilion
Monday, June 21, 2014
One of the more unusual items this summer must certainly be the free show by Bob Mould at the Pritzker Pavillion in Millenium Park. Normally, this is the site for casual high brow classical music produced by the Chicago symphony. However, last Monday, the indie-punk icon played an 80-minute, 23-song show that reminded one of why Mould is certainly one of America’s preeminent music innovators and legends.
The backdrop appeared to be rainy skies, but parted ways for an explosive series of two to three minute songs that ran without barely a pause. Mould was backed by drummer Jon Wurster and bassist Jason Narducy, the musicians who worked with him on the recently released “Beauty & Ruin” album. This latest effort is certainly his best since the 1990s.
This music improv sends the message that Chicago is a summer music capital…now off to the festivals!
